The Slovak Republic is a landlocked country, situated in central Europe. It has five immediate political neighbors: Hungary to the south, Austria to the southwest, Czech Republic to the northwest, Poland to the north, and Ukraine to the east. The country is rather mountainous; almost half of its territory is taken up by the Carpathian Arc – a range of mountains stretching across the north. Slovakia's highest point is to be found in Tatra Mountains, it is known as the Gerlach Peak. The lowland areas are preferably located in the southern region. Slovakia has a continental type of climate. The summers are generally warm and humid; the winters are cold and cloudy.
